PAC Meeting Minutes Oct 24. 2016

Woodward PAC Meeting Minutes:

Date: Oct 24, 2016 Called to order at 6:40pm

In Attendance:

Scott Plumb, Lorna Ko, George Tourlidis, Jyoti Dhaliwal, Farah Dhaliwal, Sundeep Saran, Kathleen Wong, Bonnie Tan, Terry Tan, Gina Mahil

Approval of last meetings minutes:

Gina motioned to approve previous minutes from Sep 19th meeting. George second and all in favour – approved

Principal’s Report:

School is not closing.

PAC enhancement list request given to teachers last week but due to school closure meetings and parent-teacher conferences no requests were made.  Scott will remind staff this week to submit their requests to be presented at next meeting.

Mr Ray has put in a request for PAC to purchase drones.  PAC has asked for more information on quantity wanted, pricing and possibility of spearheading a Tech Club to allow access to gaming funds for purchase.

Volleyball tournaments start Oct 25 with games at Woodward on Tuesday and Wednesday and a game at Kidd on Thursday.  Mr Imagawa is coaching.

Open gym, organized by South Arm Community Centre, starts Wednesday, Nov 2.  Price is $10/term or $1 drop in

Remembrance ceremony on Thursday, Nov 10 starting at 10:40am.

Santa pancake breakfast to be held on Friday Dec 9.  $100 paid by PAC previously approved.

Winter musical to be on Wednesday Dec 14 from 6:30-8:30pm

Motion for $150 for supplies needed for musical including costumes and props by Bonnie; 2nd by Kathleen; all approved.

Teacher Appreciation Brunch to be held on Thursday, Dec 15. Food to be delivered at staff room starting at 7am.

PAC Chair Report:

DPAC meeting update:

RDPA 1st meeting was held Oct 4.  Lynn Archer, Assistant District Supervisor, spoke on the new curriculum. A 5 page written document has been submitted to the Ministry of Education on the shortfalls occurring in BC schools resulting in a 10 minute teleconference with the Ministry.

Submissions by schools for expenditures such as dry grad, Foodsafe and movie licenses can be made to RDPA to those cover costs.

RDPA will be hosting PAC 101 session in November for school PACs to learn what other PACs are doing at their schools.

Richmond Stands United:

Has youtube video highlighting some of the challenges faced by BC schools  at www.RichmondSchoolsUnited.ca and www.facebook.com/RichmondSchoolsUnited.

Has spot on their website for statements for anyone wishing to comment on schools or education in BC.

Is willing to come to PAC to give talk on how to help rally support at their school.

Woodward PAC will keep open communications with Richmond Stands United at this time.

Treasurer’s Report:

No changes to report for October.

Old Business:

Reiteration that $2000 approved for dance/music program.

Motion by Bonnie to raise field trip allotment form $10/student to $25. 2nd by Sundeep; all approved.

Motion by Kathleen to raise author visit amount from $400 to $500. 2nd by George; all approved

Halloween Event:  Fri Oct 28 from 6-8pm.  Set up on stage to commence Thursday afterschool for Haunted House.  Set up to be finished Fri afterschool from 3-5pm.  Event to include 2-Grade 12 students from McNair performing card tricks to be paid $30/ea; both cheques made payable to Maxim Viel for a total of $60, photo booth, haunted house and dance party.  Best costume prizes to be awarded in baby, primary and intermediate categories.  Admission to be charged: $2/person Under 2yrs free.

Gaming license for up to $20 000 and will encompass Xmas raffle and spring fair to be applied for.

New Business:

BCTF is offering 90 minute free workshops on topics such as Antibullying, Advocating for your child, Aboriginal content in the curriculum, Racism, What does the revised curriculum mean for my child?, Social media 4 parents, Student privacy: What parents need to know about the collection of student data, Supporting your child’s Learning, Supporting gender-inclusive communities, Why no school today? Professional development and my child’s classroom. These can be booked for a PAC meeting or another night if there is interest.

Grant’s up to $10,000 are available for schools to plan events in relation to Canada`s 150yr anniversary in 2017. Application deadline is Nov 18, 2016, the City of Richmond will be doing a year long celebration. To apply contact richmondcanada150@richmond.ca.

Xmas raffle: Theme to be picked by teachers by Nov 24. Notices to parents to go out Nov 25. $5/item. Baskets to be assembled evening of Dec 8 and on display before the morning of Dec 9. Tickets to be sold Dec 12,13 & 14.

Spring Fair 2016 had 2 unclaimed prizes. One prize for O'Hares Pub already expired and was discarded. Other prize for $25 iTunes card will be reincorporated into Spring Fair 2017 prizes.

Looking for suggestions for community charities that the school would be interested in supporting.  Food bank collection around April – Spring Fair mentioned.  Scott to ask teachers for any preferences.   Fundraising Committee contact will be Kathleen Wong who will work with the school staff/PAC to ensure there is no overlap in fundraising events (ie. Terry Fox, Christmas, Spring Fair, etc.).  Any mail from vendors or materials to be reviewed can be put in a folder labeled Fundraising in the PAC box.
