Assessing the Data – What does it tell us for all learners at this time?

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

As our focus has shifted from whole school learning and interventions, to ‘focused intentions’ in supporting students who continue to struggle in building literacy skills (reading, reading comprehension, writing), staff are now looking at the data more closely. 

We have recently completed our Spring Whole School Reading assessments.   Once the data is available, teaching staff will meet in class teams to look at the trends from the past three reading assessments (Spring 2025, Fall 2025, Spring 2026). 

In addition, as follow up to the three teacher collaboration days held in November, January, and March, teachers will also bring samples to discuss student progress in building their writing skills.

 Questions to be explored:

  • What does the data reveal?
  • What are the trends we see in the learning outcomes?  (Are they improved across our school population through the past 12-month period?)
  • Do we see any evidence where students/groups of students may still be struggling in their learning (i.e. ELL population, other)? 
  • What ideas and resources can be utilized to address any deficits in the learning for these students in particular?
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:
  • Students who continue to struggle in developing literacy skills will be identified and targeted for continued support.  Our primary goal, at this time, is to support this targeted group to improve levels of success.
  • Staff will collaborate and discuss interventions for students who continue to experience deficits in their learning.
  • Teachers will discuss level of, and how often these interventions will occur to support this targeted group of learners throughout the remainder of the school year (i.e. additional in-class supports, targeted small group support, etc.)
  • With intervention supports in place, teachers will continue to monitor the evidence of learning of this group of students.
  • Our School Learning Story focus will be reassessed at our June staff meeting (i.e. Do we continue to focus on Literacy skill building into the next school year to address the continued learning needs of an identified group of learners?)
