Building Literacy Skills
| What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus? | Staff engaged in our Fall school wide reading assessment. Please see image below to share in our Fall 2025 school wide results in these four categories: Comprehension/Summarize, Decoding/Fluency, Inferring, and Making Connections. Staff have also engaged in Pro D and Collaboration with district teacher consultants where ideas and strategies are exchanged and explored. Regular check-ins are scheduled through the school year leading to our Spring 2026 follow up school wide reading assessment. We aim to share those results in a future Evidence post. |
| What gap or problem do these actions aim to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? | Back in Spring 2024, ‘voice’ from our Student Survey revealed a lack of confidence and engagement in writing activities (journals, story writing, project write ups, etc.). This matched what teachers were experiencing with students. Building Literacy skills in writing and reading was an area of learning identified as a widespread need for Woodward students. Growth Mindset as our primary School Learning Story focus was chosen with the aim to boost confidence and the feeling ‘I can do it’. The mood meter was introduced so students could develop a deeper understanding of how they are feeling, how others may be feeling, and that it’s okay to feel this way; it’s just what we do with these feelings that affect student initiative, growth and continued progress. |
| Based on quantitative and qualitative data (including feedback from scanning), how effectively has this strategy addressed the identified gap or problem? | Our Spring 2025 student survey revealed understanding of what Growth Mindset is and how it can serve students in their learning (I can vs. I can’t). Students also revealed other areas of learning where they continue to struggle in feelings of confidence and engagement (i.e. Numeracy). This information provides staff with areas of focus we may pursue next. |
| How will we move forward accordingly? What adjustments do we need to make if we have or have not achieved our goals? | During Pro D and Collaboration days, staff continue to share and explore resources, strategies, learning ideas that promote building skills engagement in reading and writing. Having a Growth Mindset with a focus on understanding our emotions (Mood Meter) continues to support students in building confidence and developing an ‘I can do it’ mindset. During collaboration, staff will check in: ‘What is working?’, ‘What needs to change?’. Explorations will continue with our eye on the goal of enhancing student engagement and proficiency in Literacy skill building. |
